Ben: Tonsils & Adenoids

I feel like the worst mom ever! Who makes their kid get their tonsils out on the first day of Christmas vacation? I have a good excuse! This way Ben would have a full two weeks at home to recuperate. I felt really bad taking him on the first day of Christmas break, but I felt really good about the fact that he wouldn't have to miss any school! That's worth something, right?

This was the first time that Ben has had to go in for any kind of surgery. I knew everything would be ok, but the whole thought of your baby going under anesthesia is just scary! (And sad!)
Ben had his surgery done at St. Francis Children's Hospital, so I guess they assume that all of the kids that come in are really you and interested in Dora the Explorer. Ha Ha!! It just struck us as funny that our 13 year old boy would be content to watch Dora! The range of what we watched at the hospital was quite broad! Everything from Dora and Sesame Street to Matlock and Mythbusters! Whatever it took to make Ben happy and pass the time!
Ben was NOT fond of his hospital gown!
But he did like the cool hair net! :)

The surgery went just fine. But I have to say that I have not laughed so hard in quite a long time! Yes, it was sad to see Ben so drugged, but it was also hilarious to hear him talk and what he had to say! I could NOT stop laughing! The nurse got a good laugh too! Ben said that he felt drunk, which made us wonder how he knows what that feels like. He also sounded like a drunk with the way that he was slurring his words! When we asked him how his throat felt he actually said that it felt like $*#%!! Where did that come from?!? It had to be one of the funniest things ever to watch him coming out of the anesthesia! Maybe that was so that it took our minds off of the sadness of watching him be in pain. :)
When we finally got home from the hospital Ben had a get well gift from Grammy. What could make you feel better than a gift from Grammy?
You might not be able to tell, but he loved his Manning shirt! I know he was smiling inside!

Ben has done VERY well with the recovery process so far! He has been really good about taking his pain medicine and drinking lots of fluids. His favorite food so far has been mashed potatoes, but he is also looking forward to hard boiled eggs! Crazy! Ice cream and mac and cheese have also been comforting to him. I know he will be back to his normal self in no time!

Thank you so much for all of the prayers and words of encouragement! They have meant so much!

Glad you are feeling better Ben. I was about your age when I had my tonsils out. Unfortunately, mine was during summer vacation. As sad as it was for your parents, I'm happy to hear you could bring laughter to your parents and the nurses. We know how hysterical you can be at times. Nice gown and hair net!!!
